What is design thinking? A number of schools are using this tool to re-imagine not only what they are going to teach, but how they are going to teach in a rapidly changing world. To be honest, there is not much revolutionary about d-thinking, but it has made classic problem solving more accessible, collaborative, interactive, active, and human-focused. Mary Cantwell, head of the iDesign Lab at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian linked me to this video, a quick visual and primer for those who have heard about d-thinking but maybe are not sure what it looks like.
What if your faculty engaged like the folks in this video, with colleagues from schools and industry? What if you had a new set of tools that opened whole new possibilities of teaching and learning that we have not uncovered? What if the next summit had students and their teachers as co-learners? What if you hosted the next summit at your school?
Thanks for sharing, Grant. MVPS has shown great leadership and example in d-thinking. Mary is a particularly great resource and leader. We participated in their d-summit, and in fact hosted our own around future of the k-12 library (reimagine-ed.org). Whether you use d-thinking in the classroom, the department meeting, student/teacher collaborations, or strategic planning and board level investigations, it is a powerful process.
